The sunflowers are beautiful in ASPI’s garden right now, and the bees love them!

This is the best salad which my aunt introduced to me. It includes spinach, strawberries, blueberries, avocados, feta cheese, and poppyseed dressing. I think my aunt had walnuts or a similar nut when she made it. Some of the ingredients are kind of expensive but it’s really awesome. Only the blueberries are local. Unfortunately I missed when strawberries were in season locally because farmers market strawberries are the best.

Here is my first fancy dinner I made all by myself! I made stir fry with vegetables from the farmers market, so they’re local and probably organic. The bread is some kind of vegetable bread made by the coolest people at the Berea farmers market. And that’s wine that I bought at a liquor store!
I spent today exploring Berea by myself, checking out all the artisan places and small shops. It was a pretty fun day, even though I’m disappointed the really cute guy from the farmers market wasn’t there.

Here we have my first legal drink in the U.S. (a margarita from Guady’s), my first Liquor Barn purchases (bourbon and champagne), and the frozen pizza we got at Speedway. I have a bunch of random pictures I took from us hanging out the night of my birthday and a couple of pictures that I really like of me at Guady’s with my first drink, but I don’t feel like sharing those with the internet. We all had a pretty good time and being 21 would be even more awesome if I wasn’t currently living in a small town which is also dry.

Our pretentious looking counter last week. We thought it looked kind of fake; so we all took pictures of it.

Darren Criss Concert!!

I went to see Darren Criss in Nashville with my cousin. First, I went to pick her up in Bowling Green. However, I pulled over at a gas station because I was confused by the directions that I had and when I got out of my car I locked my keys in my car. Eventually, my uncle drove my cousin out to where I was and brought several things to try to unlock my car. Fortunately he works on cars. His more legitimate things wouldn’t work on my car and he ended up playing around with a wire hanger for like 40 minutes. It finally worked!

We made it fine to Nashville still with plenty of time to spare. We got there two hours before the concert started and waited in the long-ass line. Hallie and her friend Annie waited in line with us, but we were separated from them after we got inside due to the craziness. My cousin and I were kind of in the middle; it was just a standing room. Then we stood there for an hour until the opening act, Theo Katzman, started. He was actually the drummer when Darren played later.

Eventually, Darren played and it was awesome!! He’s so good live and I loved the concert. He played a good mix of new and old songs. The arrangements they did of his songs were a lot of fun. Also, Chord Overstreet came out and did a surprise performance with Darren. I'll post pictures later. I tried to get a decent picture from every song. It was difficult because of the lighting and a not so great camera.

After the show, we waited in line for merchandise. I ended up buying a shirt and a poster for my cousin, and she got several things. Then, we waited in line to meet Theo Katzman and my cousin got a picture with him.

We decided to wait outside with other people to hopefully meet Darren. I guess he usually goes out after shows for autographs and pictures. He eventually came out after we waited about a hour. He got everyone’s attention to tell us that he wasn’t going to take pictures because he wanted to go see a friend’s show, but he would still do autographs. Everyone was very respectful and not crazy and screaming at him or anything which I was kind of afraid.would happen. We had a really great place in the line. I didn’t have anything for him to sign, but my cousin did. I was really hoping to get a picture with him, but I just took a couple pictures of him as he went by. He was going through pretty quickly signing people’s stuff and I just said “hi” to him pretty excitedly and he looked up and said “hi” back to me. Then I said something like “it’s really nice to meet you” and he moved on. It was pretty great.

We fangirled on the way back to the car. My cousin and I spent the night at our aunt’s house since she lives in Nashville.

We had a really great time. It was so awesome to see him live and actually meet him!!

After our second day at ASPI we had homemade pizza, beer, and more gin and tonics. I know it had black olives and green peppers on it and there might have been something else. It was sooo good.

The best trail mix I’ve ever had. We love the Amish store in Berea.

Dinner celebrating our first day at ASPI. It’s a burrito and gin and tonic. My roommate likes making drinks.
I’m disappointed I didn’t get a picture of the pasta and wine we had the night before which was super good.

Summer Internship

This summer I have an internship with Appalachia- Science in the Public Interest. I’m mostly working with the community garden in town, but there is also a garden at ASPI. In the mornings I work in the gardens and in the afternoons I do outreach and research. This has been my first week and it’s really awesome. ASPI is a cool place and  I like all the people I work with. This internship is perfect because I get to help people get local, organic food and get to learn about growing your own food with hands-on experience.

Since I’m in a whole new town I’m living in an apartment with another intern who also goes to Centre. The apartment is actually in a building that a church owns. They use the other half of the building a couple times a week (they have Bible Charades over there!), and our apartment is separate from it. The apartment is so big compared to a dorm that we don’t know what to do with all the space. There are two bedrooms, a full kitchen, two bathrooms (one with a shower), a huge living room, and an office. Also, it’s already furnished. The church was really nice to let us stay here with little rent. My roommate and I have been getting along pretty well and she knows how to cook which is awesome. We’ve had some really good meals when she’s here. There is another intern who goes to Centre and she’s going to be staying with us a couple nights a week. So it’s nice to have another person around sometimes. A couple downsides to the apartment: bugs and mold. I don’t know if it was our fault because we should have stored stuff better or maybe because the fridge won’t get very cold, but I had to completely clean out the fridge earlier and throw some stuff away because of mold. It was kind of gross.

I think this summer is going to be pretty awesome. I love my internship and my living situation is pretty cool. I want to invite friends over sometime and I want to go visit friends and family on the weekends.

I think I’m coming back to Tumblr, at least for the summer. I have some cool stuff going on. I should be getting access to wireless internet tomorrow and I will post then! I could do it now, but I’m tired.
